Is it okay to be outside with a 5 month old when it's in the upper 90's?

Recently my truck has had to get parked because of issues with the tires so I am having to walk quite a bit. I stay out of the heat of day as much as possible but I have to pick my daughter up from school everyday at 3:00. So, we have to walk when it's pretty hot. Today it was 97 degrees F and it's only set to get worse. My son rides in his travel system under the canopies and I keep him in just his diaper. I also always bring a bottle with cool water in it, which he is more than eager to drink. He seems to be doing pretty well with it. But I was wondering how unsafe this could be for him. We are gone a little less than an hour. Should this be fine and is there anything more I can do for him to keep him cool?

I have always had transportation with my kids so walking in the summer with an infant is pretty unnerving to me even though I am sure tons of moms do it.

note: my daughter cannot walk home alone because she is only six. They won't even release her from her classroom unless I am there to pick her up.

Keep doing what your doing. Lots of fluids, shaded from the sun. Might also want to try carrying in ziploc baggie, a cold cloth with cold water in it..so if he seems to be uncomfortably warm you can wipe him down a little...or let him hold the cloth and suck on it.

  • It sounds like you are doing all the right things, keeping him shaded and out of the sun and well hydrated. Its one of those situations that may not be ideal, as normally it would be better to be inside on such hot days, but your of course have to go pick up your daughter so just be aware and do the best you can. The only thing I might would do in addition to what you are doing is put some sunblock on him, even in the shade, he could get sun, and its better to be safe when it comes to sun exposure and babies.

Make sure that he gets plenty of fluids and stays out of the direct sun which it seems your doing, I don't think a walk to the school is going to harm him, just splash a bit of water on his head here and there to keep him cool..

Well as long as he is out of the sun and you limit you time outdoors he should be fine just if he seems really hot when you get back give him a cool bath to take his temp down a bit.

It should be fine and it seems like you're doing everything to keep him well hydrated and out of the sun.
