I just got back from a job interview but it wasn't an interview...?

...it was an application test! I started getting suspicious when someone turned up at reception for the same job and their interview time was the same as mine- odd, I thought. We were both in suits. By the time someone came to collect us there were 8 altogether - and some of them dressed far too casual for a formal interview- so half of us knew in advance there was a test.

Should I have issues with this?

And do I send a thank you note for inviting me, as I would after an actual interview. I can hardly thank them for taking the time to see me.

Update:

I mean- should I have issues that some of them were told it would be a test (and possibly that it was Word and Excel) and a couple of us were not told this?

I wouldn't have an issue with it. I might be a bit disappointed I'd prepared for a one on one interview when infact it turned out to be a test but if that's how they want to do things...

Perhaps there was a lot of applicants for the position and the best way to find the most suitable and qualified as simply as possible was to have the applicants take the tests. It is unfair if some of you were told and some weren't but in my opinion you either have knowledge of Word/Excel etc or you don't, being warned wouldn't really make a difference. If you complain to them you might spoil your chances of being offered a 2nd interview.

I have never sent a thank you card after an interview and have never come across anyone else doing it either. I really don't think it makes a difference to your application.

    Hello Tertia:

If this employer did not publicize the fact that the initial visit would be an employment test and led you to believe it would be a private interview, then you should have issue with it.

It would be a good idea to call the HR department and ask them if this is their standard practice. If it is, then you should look elsewhere. Any employer that does not communicate truthfully with their potential employees, will only be worse after you're hired.

In your thank you note, include a portion that says:

Thank you for the opportunity to take the employment test at [Company name]. While I was led to believe that we would be participating in private interviews on the initial visit, I look forward to the next phase of the screening process that will include a private interview."

Send the thank you note to the manager of the HR department. Call them, to get a specific name with whom to correspond. It may be that the manager doesn't know this is occurring. It will also alert them that they are risking the loss of a good candidate through their disorganized recruiting process.

So sorry you had a bad experience. Best of luck with your search.

It happens a lot nowadays, especially where numeracy and literacy could be an issue. If you passed the tests then you may be invited back for a formal interview. No, you really shouldn't have issues with this. It saves a lot of time, when you expect to interview lots of people who may not have the necessary basic key skills to start with.

I have never heard of sending thank you notes after an interview. They probably never get more than glanced at anyway. Its just more work for the panel.

Well if it was an application test then your were one of the chosen ones to actually take part in it. I am the same way about sending thank you cards to the employers after an interview too.

I would send them a thank you card...It lets them know that you are very interested in taking the position that is available. It look good on you.

    Wish you all the luck!

Source(s): I also send out thank you cards to the employer.

Perhaps beginning your note with, "Although I was told to and came prepared for a private interview, I appreciate the opportunity to . . ."

    will do.

I know, that's very irritating. I also have experienced losing precious time farting around with what feels like incompetent administrators/staff. What would they have lost by being accurate and truthful? Well, at least you've learned something about how company policies are implemented...or not.

    Best wishes.
