2 will be retired if Jeter quit today. It's a lock. The Yankees have an extreme fondness for retiring numbers and, following what they've done in the past, it's hard to imagine them not retiring Torre's #6. He's certainly more deserving than Billy Martin (#1). Then again these are the Yankees we're talking about so it's very easy to see them being vengeful and not doing it. To the answerer who said Jeter's number will not be retired because he is not in the same class as Ruth and Gehrig - I agree, he's not in the same class. However, he is certainly far beyond the class of Maris (#9), Rizzuto (#10), Munson (#15), Howard (#32), all of whom have had their number retired by the Yankees. And if it's not already, by the time he's done his career will also be more impactful than Mattingly's (#23), Guidry's (#49) and, dare I say, Ford's (#16).

EDIT: He wore it for his tenure as manager of the Yankees. Here's what he did as a manager there:
6 WS Appearences
4 WS Wins
AVG Finish of 1.2
Made playoffs 12/12
12 Consecutive Seasons of 12 or more games over 500
A career WP of .605 with the Yankees
Three consecutive 100 win seasons, four in total
One 114 Win season (1998)
There's a good chance it'll be retired for Joe Torre in the future.
