Should the government be allowed to use eminent domain for a memorial?
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/29/flight.disp...
The area in Pennsylvania where flight 93 crashed is being designated for a memorial. The 2,200 acres "needed" for the memorial will encroach on privately owned land. Should the government be allowed to use eminent domain (government can seize privately owned property to convert it to public use after paying the owner fair market value)?

No, what is next? It is absurd that the government needs 2,200 acres for a memorial. This is the government using its absolute power over a private land owner and oppressing his right. If I was the private land owner, I would fight this tooth and nail in the court system because typically, eminent domain is used for public utilities, highways, and railroads. The compensation for the land must be higher than market price.

In general - no. In this economy - definitely not. There are better things to spend our money on at this moment. Plus, how bad is it to take something via eminent domain when land is at an 20 year low, talk about the owner of this property getting hosed.

The government should have no "right" to allocate that land for a memorial. No way. If they so wish to do, they should compensate the land owners accordingly for what it is worth.........and more. It was an "accident". The land owner did not know that was going to happen and just because it happened over their land, does not mean they should have to give up rights to that land. No way...no.
Offered correct compensation, I have no problem, but it is their land. This is America.

Not only is it immoral, it also happens to be a direct violation of the Constitution. The government has no authority to come and force you to take an extremely low-ball offer for your land.

Absolutely not. There is no need for them to have a memorial that size. Unfair to the owners of the property.

They don't need 2200 acres for a memorial. Politicians and bureaucrats are long past needing reining in. They must be brought under control.

Eminent domain is Nazi language for "We're taking your land"
