You guys said they crucified Jesus cos they wanted to make is slow and painful but why?
What did Jesus actually do and why would God let them do that? Why couldn't they make it quick and fast and not so painful? That's pretty mean dont you think?
This also makes me think that this is why most Christians dont want to pull the plug on old people.. Its cos they should die slowly in the same was as Jesus did. Since Christians always say we should live our lives like Jesus.
I think I understand now. Torturing someone like that will make it really painful and I would want them to finish me off faster rather than slower. but that means Jesus must of done something really bad cos even serial killers dont get tortured. He must have been worst than a serial killer.

The Jews promised to keep God's Laws, but it was impossible, and if you don't then your cursed.
The Bible says, 'Cursed is everyman hanging upon a stake.'
So, Jesus died upon a stake/cross/tree as a curse, as a substitute for the Jews. He took the punishment of sin for them, and the whole world, if they repent.
He took our punishment. It was an act of love. There would be no hope of eternal immortal life without the payment.
We should appreciate that he took our punishment! He took what we deserve for even 1 sin. The payment of sin is death.
Do you want to pay for your sin? You don't have too! It is your choice.

If you say Jesus is God then why did he do it to himself? Can God really die and forget about creating and being involved in the whole of the various galaxies and universes we have yet to discover? Can he really suffer if he had no animal or ego soul to have free will like a human? That is why some protestant and other denominations do not hold to a lot of the universal (catholic) views. Like the Muslims they believe Jesus was a prophet, but taken directly up to heaven ... so no matter what you feel about Jesus, the fact is that any crucifixion was and is horrible and no one would have turned anyone over to the Romans, God forbid. Rome even drawn and quartered victims or blinded them as some of the Pharisee sages were. No Jew was safe from the Romans.
Rome records show they crucified thousands, and in the first century alone, over 6,000 were killed and not one a citizen (they were only exiled, like Paul was). And what they record isn't what the gospels said which was only put into writing about the end of the 2nd cent. with Mark (the first gospel), and the rest between the 2nd and 4th century into final form. Recently they have unearthen more evidence supporting the Roman records: the citizens complained of the noise, smells and sights, so the crucifixions were kept at the town dump where only soldiers were allowed, rats, and animals left their tracks, the people were tied to the top of the T and the feet were hammered, wounds were created so the bugs and flies were eat the flesh from the inside out ... they stayed on the T until all the bones fell to the ground and you could never locate one from another as animals would drag them around. Jews and others protested, but there were few in comparison, only 6,000 Pharisees among a million in the Holy Land. While there were a million Jews in Egypt, too many were afraid of Rome in the first century after Herod died about 8 bce ... Even Philo, who wrote works in Greek for the poor secular Jews and God-Fearers who had to serve as slaves, soldiers and indentured housemaid and prostitutes for years before they could get their freedom brought by the Jews and friends of the Jews, was asked to represent the whole of Jewry in Rome. Philo had guts, he was a student of the Pharisees and Menachem the Essene Pharisee in the first of the century. His own brother turned on Philo and became a pagan citizen, so Philo felt he had some pull.
Life is precious. Think about this. Remember when the Arab terrorists attacked the school van of religious Jewish boys? One died. The second one seriously hurt was in a coma, the doctors pleaded to pull the plug. The doctors had proof the boy would never recover. The Jewish rabbis who were also doctors, didn't give in. Today this young boy is not only a scholar, but married with children of his own.
Where there is hope there is God and where there is God there is hope.

That was the way Romans crucified people. He died the way we deserve to die, so that we didn't have to. The creator of the universe, the God of everything, did that for every human being so they wouldn't have to suffer like that. That is ultimate love, wouldn't you say?
As for that last part, I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're talking about and how that possibly relates to the way a christian is supposed to live. We're called to live like Christ, and carry our cross. It never mentions anywhere in the bible that christians are supposed to die a slow death. If by "pull the plug" you mean, just put an old person to death, that's just murder. Death will come inevitably. There is no need to initiate it if it's already going to happen. And if you are a christian, who cares about death? You have eternity with Papa God to look forward to.

There are many theories. The Romans crucified 'criminals' because it was a slow and painful method. The idea was that the victims died a slow, painful and humiliating death from shock, blood loss, blood poisoning or dehydration, so that it deterred other people from committing crime. People normally died only 2-3 days after being crucified.

The Romans did that to tens of thousands of Jews at that time, not just jesus. Tens of thousands of Jews were nailed to Roman crosses and crucified.
This is what the symbolism is. Jews being murdered on Roman/Christian crosses. And this symbol was paraded by both the Catholics and the Protestants. As in "This is what we must do to every Jew we find." And they pretty much tried to wipe out the Jews entirely.

much like all other capital tortures, the crucifixion was designed to inflict a slow and painful death, just to scare the potential followers away.
if you are zealous enough, plain chopping your head away might not deter you from certain deeds, or thoughts. the imagination of a slow and painfull death, on the other hand lets you rethink the odds once more.
Source(s): following the defeat of the gladiator uprisal in Rome, led by spartacus, the crosses were standing in the regular distances along the access road from the location all the way to Rome itself, "decorated" with decaying captured gladiators corpses. cit.: "Meanwhile a dangerous enemy was threatening Italy within her own borders. In 73 a band of gladiators, under the leadership of one of their number, named SPARTACUS escaped from the training school at Capua and took up a strong position on Mount Vesuvius. They were joined by large numbers of slaves and outcasts of every description, and were soon in a position to defeat two Praetors who were sent against them. The next year they assumed the offensive; and Spartacus found himself at the head of 100,000 men. Four generals sent against him were defeated; and for two years he ravaged Italy at will, and even threatened Rome. But intestine division showed itself in his ranks; his lieutenants grew jealous of him, and his strength began to wane. In 71 the command of the war was given to CRASSUS, who finished it in six months. Spartacus fell, fighting bravely, near Brundisium. Pompey, returning from the Sertorian war in Spain, met five thousand of those who had escaped from the array of Spartacus. These he slew to a man. Crassus pointed the moral of his victory by hanging, along the road from Rome to Capua, six thousand captives whom he had taken. Jesus was a rebel. Pontius Pilate understood this. That's why he washed his hands. The Pharisees demanded Jesus' death and crucifixion was the normal method of execution at the time.
I can't understand the connection to old people. With a bit of luck, we all get old.
When my mother was 88, she fell ill and was taken to hospital. She said to me, 'I don't want to be kept alive artificially.' I told the doctor. He said, 'Your mother is not going to die,' and I said, 'Oh yes she is. She is very strong willed and she wants to go.' And she died. The doctor looked at me as though I were a witch. He actually said, 'What sort of woman are you?'.
However, you should look into the gruesome horrors of death by crucifixion. It's not quite the same as being fed intravenously and being on a life support machine.

It is the way that people were executed at that time. If you think about it the electric chair or death by lethal injection is not a lot better. I do not know if it has anything to do with not allowing euthanasia. I think the argument for keeping people on life support etc and dying like that are different.

Because they hated him, they wanted him to suffer. They even choose killing him an innocent man over a murderer. He claimed he was the son of God telling Pharisees they were wrong in their teachings and etc. They didn't want to believe him and admit they were wrong. In one part it even talks about how they mock him on the cross telling him if he's really Jesus why don't you just save yourself and not go through the pain. The reason God didn't save him is because that was the whole reason for him being on earth in the first place. He had to die in order for us to be saved. It goes to show how much he loves us.

Jesus preached the word of god and claimed to be the son of god but many people of various religion that had authority were against that since that was blasphemy to them so they made sure Jesus had a slow and horrible death. And no, Christians have faith that people can still be saved if they pray if it's god's will.
