9th graders don't have to have a laptop although it would be easier for school. Your best bet is to get him a desktop computer be it mac or pc; I would recommend a pc because its most likely the type the school has in its lab or classrooms but if you do get a pc Windows XP is probably better than Vista for him although I find very little difference. As for a brand I would recommend Dell; most businesses have them and they last a long time not to mention they let you customize the computer the way you want it. If you were to get a Mac it would take a little getting used to although they are just as good.

Whatever anyone says give him a laptop. if you are worried about **** and him doing stupid things just buy him a mac they are more stable and dont get viruses . its probably the best thing that you can do. and there are ways to block certain pages on it so just ask apple when you buy it

im a seventh grader and a have a personal laptop.... i think you should get your son one unless he's a trouble maker,grades are slipping,or you think he'll make a facebook or myspace because those websites are very unsafe and i wouldn't make a myspace or facebook for my life.if you do get him a personal laptop, i would suggest getting a cheapie one unless your rich and fulled to the brim with monet. my laptop is justa $300 gateway laptop.
