The date of a Catholic confirmation is known a year in advance. It is impossible to get confirmed on the spur of the moment in the Catholic Church. One must attend classes, and some churches still require confirmants to be tested by their priest or bishop.

Also, of course children are allowed to witness. It is a huge family and community affair. The congregation is always full on confirmation day. It usually happens on Easter Vigil, btw.

It depends. I am also getting confirmed today. Unlike many others, I was baptized and received my first communion years ago, but due to moving and other factors, I missed being confirmed. I have a four year theological education and was able to demonstrate to the priests in my parish that I was ready...which was only about 2 weeks ago.

So, if your husband was ready, then he may have just realized that he could do it recently....it is possible.
