Why does everyone say maths?

When I grew up, it was either called math or mathematics. It's not that hard to spell. So, why doesn't everyone just call it math. It sounds bad, mathematics seems more correct, and math is just plain easier.:D

math is mostly used by Americans. Maths is used by mostly the British. my guess is that the American norm is to try and make things as easy as possible.

personally, i prefer the term "maths" as opposed to math. why? well Mathematic is not correct, but in european languages they tend not to have an "s" at the end so for them a similar form would be correct. when one writes "math" it could be that they don't know Mathematics has an "s" at the end or it could be that they're just very lazy. in contrast, "maths" retains the full identity of "mathematics" in saying maths we are acknowledging the "s" in mathematics and acknowledging the distinction between say "mathematics" and "mathematik" (which is why it makes sense for germans to say mathe as they don't have an "s" at the end of mathematik".

Everyone doesn't say it. Brits say maths and Americans say math. Maths is used in Britain because its short for mathematics. And since mathematics is plural, so too is maths. I have no idea why Americans say math, but they do! Live with it.

Because the British invasion is never ending. People like to use words regardless of the word's meaning. Maths is UK English meaning "to shorten." How people here starting using that word is because the movie "Idioacracy" is really a documentary.. lol
