What kind of mulch is safe for dogs?
I've seen the warnings about mulch made from cocoa being potentially harmful to dogs. So I'm wondering what to look for, what's good? Our backyard has been torn up some by the dog running around, so we were thinking of covering it with mulch. Any other ideas?

Most every kind of mulch is totally fine for dogs for be around. Just check the label...cocoa mulch is required to be labeled as such. I mean avoiding cocoa mulch is a very good thing, but just fyi...a dog would need to ingest quite a bit of cocoa mulch for it to be considered toxic. Even with that said i would still avoid it.
They do make mulch alternatives...some made from things such as rubber...but those can be quite expensive.

The local dog park uses hog fuel, which is chipped and shredded brush. It results in a coarse bark-like mulch. Attractive, and generally cheaper than bark dust or nuggets. Make sure the hog fuel has been made for playgrounds; otherwise it might contain things like nails, etc if it came from a construction site.
Gravel is another option, but is more expensive and more difficult to work with, if you need to move it from one spot to another (eg, from the pile dumped in the driveway to the back yard).
