60 Seconds and 1 minute aren't really the same?

A minute is generally 60 seconds. Some minutes are 61 seconds owing to the introduction of leap seconds, but that is unimportant here.

Most microwave ovens have generally simple inputs, when you type 1-2-0, you fill it's digit buffer with 1-2-0, which is interpreted according to the format m:ss and not, as you think, sss.

The reason for this is that, generally, people have been found to put items on for periods of time which span several minutes and it is easier to simply input a number of minutes plus an amount of seconds than it is to do the arithmetic to work out how many seconds the desired amount converts to. If all cooking instructions quoted seconds, then microwaves would have an input panel which read in a number of seconds instead. But, the defacto method for measuring time is done using a hierarchy of units (which we call seconds, minutes, hours etc).

It's as simple as that.

Actually 60 seconds is the same as 1 min cause of you add 60 seconds and 60 seconds you don't get a minute and 20 seconds you get 120 and I'd you divide that by 2 you get 2 60 seconds and 60 seconds is equally to 1 minute so you have 2 minutes so even tho it may not seem the same it is the same do you get it now.

When you see time represented on your microwave, think of the colon as the word "and". So if you see 1:20, read it as 1 minute AND 20 seconds. So one minute and 20 seconds is represented as "1:20" on your microwave. 1:20 in seconds = 80 seconds. The "1" = 60 seconds AND the 20 = 20 seconds. Add that together and you get 80 seconds.

2:00 = two minutes AND zero seconds. If each minute = 60 seconds, then 2 minutes =120 seconds, not 80 seconds.

Okay, I put on my timer on the microwave, 3:00 is that the same as 5 minutes? My father says 5:00 is five minutes on a microwave timer, so I am confused because I multiplied 60 seconds by 5 and came up with 300.

60 seconds + 60 seconds is equal to 120 seconds, not 1 minute and 20 seconds. The mistake in your math is that 1:00 is not equal to 100 seconds.

60 seconds together makes 120 seconds. The microwave has only two digit spaces for seconds. Therefore, if you attempt to type in '120' it will take it as 1:20. If the microwave took three digit spaces, it would take it as 0:120. But it doesn't.

Do me a favor. Try your hardest not to take inconsequential issues to the next level of seriousness.

A minute is 60 seconds. A microwave is a very unreliable source for time. Your microwave thought you wanted to do 1 minute, and twenty seconds. But... If you get a stopwatch and a clock, You'll find that if you stop your stopwatch on 120 seconds, that... TWO MINUTES HAVE PASSED! *GASP*

So, if you cook 1 + 1 on a microwave you're going to get 2 minutes, right? SO if you add 60 + 60 minutes, You got 1 minute and 20 seconds.

That's where you're wrong. When the microwave said 1:20 minutes, it didn't mean minutes, it mean seconds

Now, add 60+60 again, 120 SECONDS, 120 seconds = 2 minutes

So, 60+60 = 2 Minutes.

You read a time in certain unit of time like 1:00 + 1:00 you should have the same unit of time like the answer 2:00 or 2 minutes or to convert in another unit of time you will have 1:20 or 1 minute and 20 seconds or 120 seconds if you will read it in pure seconds.2 minutes, of course, in seconds will be one hundred and twenty seconds.
