The essential meaning of life is continuation of the species through self-preservation and reproduction. Adaptation of the essential meaning to human civilization translates to most favorable benefit to risk ratios in practices defined by moral imperative as proposed by Immanuel Kant (no individual benefit may exceed the value of individual contribution / no abstract value may exceed that which is actual and physical). Therefore the meaning of (human) life is:

    .noitubirtnoc laicos hguorht tifeneb laudividnI

    .ytirahc hguorht ytirepsorP

    .tseretni evitcelloc hguorht tseretni-fleS

... not the opposites, and any contrary action is always contrary to the interests of the collective which is in turn, contrary to the interests of the self.

See? It's not so complicated after all.

    Hope that spleh!

Why did you reverse some of your words, but not all of them? Why did you even reverse some! It has no relevance to your question! ??? I'm confused! Haha! : )

Well... I have no favorite philosopher? : { Sorry! I know... shameful eh? Haha!

But life is defined by the characteristics of life. For something to be living it must keep homeostasis and must reproduce... just for two of them.

Now life to us as people is the conscienceness of the mind to be able to realize that we are indeed alive and can affect our future by the choices that we make. The comprehension aspect to it. (This is why when someone has no brain activity in a hospital... the are declared as good as dead... even though they technically are still alive! [We go by, "What's the point of living, if you aren't able to think enough to appreciate life?"]).

Some people believe life is the opposite of death. In a certain way that could be deemed as true, but there is more to it than that. Life is not just not being dead. Life is being fully aware of the fact that you are alive.

I hope this helped. But I must remind you. I'm no famous philosopher. Haha! : )
