Under treaty we are obligated to assist in the defense of Taiwan and as such it is a possibility. China knows this and understands that if she attacks and invades Taiwan she must do so as quickly as possible before the US has enough time to build a response. Currently she doesn't have the Naval or Air assets/capabilities to launch such an attack.

taiwan is a u.s. customs territory by treaty of san fran 1951 and the u.s. has an obligation to respond if commie china attacks or invades taiwan. allowing china to get away with anything of the sort would only destabalize the entire region. any u.s. president is obligated to respond to defend taiwan because they hold the ownership claims in trust by the u.s federal gov. also, to keep the region stable to maintain the strategic edge they have regarding taiwan.

Depends on whether or not China has a legitimate reason - like a national tragedy or something the likes of 9/11 for example.
Such a thing would make American involvement even merely as a moderating influence questionable.

I'm sorry if it hurts anyone. But the truth is that the US will think twice before taking any such step against the China that it is today.
