How dangerous are ketones in pregnancy?
This is the second visit with my OB where ketones were present in my urine.I am 20 weeks pregnant and now quite concerned about this. I did not think they were a big deal because it was not made to be a big deal. But after today's visit, my doctor has scared me. I read that it can lead to brain damage in your unborn baby. Please, I need to know that others have had this and had normal, healthy babies.

Ketones: Ketones occur when your body is breaking down fats instead of carbohydrates for energy. High levels of ketones indicate that you are not getting enough to eat or if you are dehydrated.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy, you are eating for two. If you aren't eating enough, your body will burn fat to get more energy. In gestational diabetes (temporary diabetes during pregnancy) and in pregnancy with pre-existing diabetes, women are advised to check ketones each morning. If the blood glucose is normal but there are ketones present, usually the mother will be advised to increase her bedtime snack (but you should first check with your healthcare professional).
