For the most part, Windows XP and Windows Vista run fine when the hardware exceeds the requirements. To clear things up, the "best" operating system is one that YOU are comfortable using, not what someone else tells you. Reviews for software like Microsoft Windows are only intended to help consumers make the right decision on which operating system to purchase, although all retail computers today come with Vista preinstalled. Vista has been released since 2006, and almost all software supports it at this point in time, since the release of Vista's 2 service packs. If you are comfortable using Windows Vista, than stick with that. Since you have used Vista and it works fine, then you should stick with using Windows Vista. XP does use less resources and has lower hardware requirements, and does run a lot faster. There really is no "best" operating system. It's only "best" if it's what you prefer to use.

Windows 7 is not yet released - it is currently in testing stages (RC1) and is expected to be publicly released late this year or early next year. I am currently running the Release Candidate (RC) and it works absolutely fantastic. I haven't had a single crash yet. (no blue screens of death or freezups) I've been using Windows 7 since January and it is far superior to both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Windows 7 is even faster than both Vista and XP. It also has new features such as an animated boot screen, customizable User Account Control (UAC) settings, JumpLists, AeroPeek, and HomeGroup. Those are some of the many new features offered in Windows 7. In my opinion I think Windows 7 will be the best Windows OS since its release since it takes the best of both worlds. (User interface from Vista, functionality of XP & Vista mixed) Yes, Windows 7 will be very good.

Good Luck. Hope this helps. Email me for more assistance.

Vista has a few downsides of the fence: * Most of the games are no longer be supported by XP unless it does say it on the program's minimum system requirements. * Most of the computers are Vista when built and don't support an XP downgrade * Vista takes up more memory in which you should get a very good laptop for matching your lifestyle. Productivity and basic games (under $1000) or High Definition Games (Over $2000) When I get a Vista computer, I have it built by the OEM manufacturer's site instead as I have a line of credit with them and have the best deal done on it which is the most expensive of course but worth it. The cheapest the computer isn't always that good if you are considering buying high definition games like Crysis to run on it.

For all i know some people around the world haven't mastered using vista in couple of days but windows XP is easy to use and easy to understand.

I also heard about windows 7 and it is much popular and better than both XP and vista.

On identical hardware that you would find in a business or a consumer environment, try installing XP and Vista. See which one runs your applications faster. Having run both, I find XP to be better performing for most applications. Once you get to systems beyond the typical user though (i.e. over 4 GB), you are almost forced to go to Vista since the 64bit version of XP was more of a joke than a supported platform. As for Windows 7, as I understand it this will basically be a resell of Vista in a more componentized version.

"The reasons people still like XP are:

They don't have enough RAM to run Vista"

--> PC vendors built systems with Vista pre-installed and inadequate RAM. My Lenovo system came with 1 GB of RAM and was barely capable of running Vista until I disabled Aero. After upgrading to 4 GB of RAM, the system is now performing on level with my older XP system that has 1.5 GB of RAM (single core CPU as well) .

--> Microsoft and system vendors screwed the consumer (and thereby themselves) when they underspecified the system requirements.

    Benjamin a said:

"people who complain about it being a resource hog are people that have low end pc's and went for vista.

which is a very bad choice."

--> When Vista was first released, look at how many were completely under equipped to run Vista but were still labeled with the Vista sticker. These were PCs that were much higher than current XP alternatives at the time but were unable to effectively run Vista. This isn't the fault of people buying the system but a problem with PC vendors and Microsoft. Not all PC owners are going to be competent system administrators.

    ** Edit 2 **

Frank N. Stein - Do you use the system for any applications other than a web browser? Personally I don't care much about which operating system I'm using as long as I can run applications on it. In my experience, my applications ran faster on a XP system with lower end hardware than a new Vista system with better hardware. To get similar performance to my XP system, I had to upgrade the stock components to get it to a usable state.

people that say vista has issues really dont know how to work with operating systems . and expect everything to work fine when they use it.

every operating system has its flaws.

people complain about vista having compatibility issues.

ive had vista for a year now and i seriously cannot see what compatibility issues they are talking about.if a program doesnt work i just either patch the program to the latest build or set its compatibility to windows xp service pack 2.and that works like a charm.

people also complain how vista is a resource hog.

vista isnt a resource hog when u know how to configure it.

its only a resource hog cause theres to many useless services and processes turned on.

but if u close all the unecessary things u can get vista to only use 600mb memory on idle.

which is enough for modern computers today since most computers have 2gb ram now.

people who complain about it being a resource hog are people that have low end pc's and went for vista.

which is a very bad choice.

those are the two complaints i see that people complain about in vista atm.

but seriously. its a good operating system once u configure it.

but i have to admit vista out the box first time use.

itl be a resource hog.it wont support much programs.

but thats why u have to do something about it and patch everything up and upgrade service packs

after that itl run like a dream.

    and with windows xp.

ive used xp sp2 for years and last year upgraded to sp3.

    idk what to say.

ive had no problems with xp at all.

it does use less system resources than vista

    which makes games run faster.

and just run faster in general.

but its performance wont make a difference with vista if u have a high end computer.

    theyll feel the same.

and before everyone bashes me sayign im a vista fanboy

    no im not

i use any type of operating systems

my favorite one being the unix/linux operating system

Vista's problems have been fixed, that argument is dead, especially with the release of Service Pack 2. Vista had problems 2 years ago and people still hang on to that. Also, XP will not be supported after next year.

The reasons people still like XP are:

They don't have enough RAM to run Vista

    All they have is XP

    They are used to XP

    That's it.

The differences are mostly in the looks and the RAM department, but

as long as you have enough RAM, Vista puts XP to bed.

EDIT: To answer your last question (sorry), 7 is supposed to be better at dealing with RAM than Vista, although PCWorld did a speed test on them and found no real difference between them. Time will tell. Also, Win7 is still in testing form (RC1) so it's not ready yet. Later this year or beginning of next.

@ Jim Maryland: I run Vista with Aero effects and the Sidebar on 1 gig, and have no issues. I merely tweaked the setttings and startups. That's all. Easy.

for one i know xp runs faster on the same machine if substituted for vista. there is also a big compatibility issue with older programs made with xp in mind which u may have and want to use. if this is your first pc there is not much of an issue. vista is easier to use though.

I hear this argument all the time too. I just do not get it. My Windows Vista works great. I have no problems with it at all. It does everything I need it to do and then some.

What the hell is wrong with you? Would you go buy a new car with an old engine on it? Asking this question you're exposing your ignorance about computers. Choose XP because in every stupid thing you make in your new computer you'll blame Vista like all the other morons.

apples and oranges .don't try to compare the two xp is faster and lighter on resources and not as restrictive as vista and it does not come with all the eye candy that vista offers. I use xp because it's lighter and faster and not so dam restrictive and i do not need all that eye candy slowing me down and consuming all my resources and memory.
