Woke up to pain in jaw and neck! What is this?

Hi,

I woke up this morning to pain underneath my ears (around the end of my jaw). It's quite uncomfortable not only when opening my mouth, eating, talking but also on contact.

This is the first day I've had it.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what it could be? Worth a trip to the doctors?

Thanks!

Xxxx

Update:

Haha. No Ingloriousbastard - second half of your name most appropriate.

I wondered about if I slept weirdly but it's the wrong sort of pain because I've experienced that before too.

It's getting more painful actually, just underneath my ears. It's quite tender too. :(

Do we think it's mumps? Because that would seriously suck! I'm at university! What do I even do?

Were you vaccinated as a baby against mumps?

Sometimes if you have a tooth that is getting an infection or the cavity is worsening, you will expereince this pain. It's called transferral pain. It will come on fairly suddenly (as in, fine the night before - not fine *at all* in the morning).

I have personally experienced this a couple times, when I had teeth that ended up needing a root canal. Both times I *swore* I had the worst ear infection of my life, only to have them looked at and find that they are fine. However, a brief visit to the dentist, who tapped my teeth ever so slightly verified that I had a tooth problem - and he knew exactly which one it was (and so did I, when my tooth was tapped, even though only mments before it felt fine) An infected tooth will also cause a bit of swelling, so best to see your doctor to confirm - but definitely go if you develope a fever, or general aches and pains.

As to where to go - do you have a school nurse you can visit? Otherwise a local clinic will be able to see you. (Or dentist!)

Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!

Did you sleep very deep, long time in the same position on your side then this can happen, I have it also sometimes, my ears hurt or jaw, arm or shoulder. After 30 minutes or so the cramps disappear.

Don't worry to easy but look if that can be the reason.

Mumps? Wisdom teeth? ... Yes, I'd go to the Doc.

Stop freaking out. You go, you get some meds, and you get better!
