Can I keep the license key to my Windows XP install if I plan to get rid of XP and install Windows 7RC?

I have an old desktop with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Service Pack 2 on it. I would like to delete that and totally wipe my hard drive by replacing it with Windows 7 Release Candidate. Is there a way to keep my license key for that XP install and use it on future computers if I want to install XP? I don't believe the computer came with an actual install disc, only a recovery disk. Is there a way to keep XP for future computers?

A recovery disc accesses a "hidden" partition to recover the system to factory specifications.

The disc can NOT load XP on another computer unless it is an install disc.

You would have to physically move the HD containing XP to the other computer; and then when the XP on the HD "discovered" that the hardware was different, you MIGHT NOT have the necessary drivers, AND you would need to re-register it anyhow. (Sometimes just changing a sound or video card will require re-registering!!)
