Well if your laptop is new enough it might have HDMI out. If it does then that's the easiest way. Just go HDMI to HDMI and you're done. It will carry both video and audio and HD resolutions, all on one cable. But not many laptops have this standard. Its showing up a lot, but not all have it.

Otherwise you want to look for either VGA or DVI connections. You might typically use these to connect an external computer monitor to your laptop. But you can also use these to go out to an HDTV.

With DVI you want to grab a DVI to HDMI cable. Then go DVI from the computer to HDMI on the HDTV. That will cover your video.

With VGA you have lots of options to consider. You can go VGA to VGA if the TV has that. You can go VGA to Component. You can go VGA to HDMI (with a convertor box, don't get a VGA to HDMI cable). Or you can go VGA to DVI (adaptor) and then DVI to HDMI (I wouldn't entirely recommend this, but its doable). Again those would only cover video.

Now for either VGA or DVI, for the audio, you want a stereo mini (3.5mm) to RCA cable. Take the stereo mini end into your headphone jack on the laptop. Then the RCA end into the RCA audio leads on the computer (which ever leads are associated with the video input you used).

I know a bit messy in terms of all the options. But just look through it a few times and you can sort it out. You can get most of the cables around online or in stores. Here are examples to get you started.

    HDMI - http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-Ultra-High-Versi...

    DVI to HDMI - http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-PCM-2296-06...

    VGA to VGA - http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-28012-Monitor-Ferr...

    VGA to Component - http://www.amazon.com/12ftVGA-component-video-cabl...

Stereo Mini to RCA - http://www.amazon.com/Impact-Acoustics-Velocity-mi...

    VGA to HDMI - http://www.vgatohdmi.net/

These are all just examples, you can search for other options and better prices elsewhere. Its just so you get an idea.

Also, if you can give a more exact model number for both laptop and TV it might be easier to give a more concrete recommendation.

Oh and if your laptop has composite (usually a yellow plug) or s-video outputs, just avoid those. They can only handle standard definition resolutions. So if you're taking that out to an HDTV it won't look very good.

You can utilize your television to display your videos and other files that are on your laptop.

Utilize a 15-pin, male-to-male VGA cable to connect your laptop to your TV. On a Mac, the VGA input is easily labeled with a “display” icon. It’s suggested that you do this with all powered off.

As A Replacement For of a VGA cable, you can also use an S - Video cable. All TV’s have an S-video input.

You can also use a wireless converter. It changes over the digital signal on your laptop into a format your analog TV can show

    S-video

    VGA

    DVI

    HDMI

There are adapters and converters if your laptop and TV don't have the same ports.
