Without looking it up, can any creationist tell me what the theory of evolution is?

P.S Atheists, shhhhh, I'm testing them!

Update:

Ho Bo

Actually I directed the question at creationists, not Christians, theists who accept evolution are not creationists as such. As my understanding is that creationism is incompatible with evolution, however theism is not.

And I understand Christianity perfectly. I have read the bible and understand the messages it tries to portray and the theology behind it. I understand the story of the original sin, the story of Jesus, and why he needed to die for our sins, and the concept of repentance and redemption through Jesus Christ. Understanding the story does not mean to say I believe that it is true though.

Update 2:

Simon C

Maybe I should have said Intelligent Design, although I still would have some objections, I am sure.

Otherwise I would have to resort to the word "anti-evolutionists," which is inappropriate because there is no such thing as an "evolutionist" or "evolutionism," it is a word invented by "creationists" to make evolution seem like a belief system of sorts.

I fully accept that evolution and theism are not mutually exclusive ideas.

Update 3:

DH

The theory of evolution says nothing about the origins of life on earth.

Update 4:

Oh dear Angel...

Abiogenesis is simply a word for the origin of life. If you deny abiogenesis, then you deny that we are here.

There is no scientific theory on abiogenesis, anyone who understands scientific terminology knows that this is because no idea of how life started has been proven. Scientists at the moment are trying to find a theory on how abiogenesis arose, their current ideas are not theories.

If Genesis were completely factual, then the moment that God created life would be abiogenesis.

I wish I'd asked if any creationists believed in abiogenesis, now. That would be a laugh.

Update 5:

Booth

No-one who understands evolution, believes that it is unguided change by chance.

Update 6:

C.S.

I do not think that creationists as a group are "stupid," maybe willfully closed- minded, or unreceptive to logic. But not stupid.

However, judging by your obvious inability to express yourself without resorting to insults, your poor semantics, and your inaccurate ridicule of evolution obliterating your transparent claim to be educated on the subject, I would hypothesise that you, the individual, are stupid.

Update 7:

Bathtime Buddies

You have given, by far and away, the best answer of any creationist as to the theory of evolution.

In fact your the only answerer that has even touched upon the "theory" of evolution. Even if your answer is more coherant with Darwin's original theory (which has been expanded on greatly now due to the discovery of DNA and an improved understanding of genetics) than the modern theory.

Well from my biology lessons in year 10, I believe it suggests we started of as single cell organisms then developed to adapt to our environment. This development happened because the ones that didn't survive the environment died, therefore, there were more adapted animals mating with each other to create an "inferior" race of animals that were better adapted to the conditions. That's what I was taught and it's probably a bit rusty. I think that the theory is an interesting one and there is some evidence to support it, but I believe mainly in creationism then evolution so to speak, but I don't believe we started off as single-cell organisms.

So, have I passed the test??? :P

Edit: Can you actuallly tell me how I did in your test?

edit: whoop!whoop! I do agree with Natural Selection (it makes sense and there's enough evidence to support it) but I feel it's a bit far-fetched to believe that we started as single-cell organisms (because then how could we have made progress from there?)

the problem with some religions is, that they they replace the unknown or unanswerable or any grey area with 'god'- god is the answer to why things are what they are. ''god'' is used to fill the void.

where as science accepts that the unkown is simply unknown and accepts when it dosent ALWAYS have an answer and what ever can me identified can be given factually to an extent, backed up with research, tests and logic. so science accepts that it dosent have an answer for EVERYTHING, and if they are wrong, then they are wrong.

so science, can be something fearfull for people who are religious or orthodox. its almost testing there faith, becuase if science is correct it proves certain beliefs wrong. and the probability of scinence, is more likey to be correct and i have noticed that most religious people turn a blind eye to it- as they fear it will weaken or question their faith.

i am a sikh. we believe in god but not as a man up in the sky, and we are his puppets.we believe 'god' is the universe if you like. we accept we cannot ever know exactly how creation came about. but we know that the universe or earth is like an organism that manifests itself. therefore it is the creator. so god IS. god is grass, tree, sky, you, me etc. this is interms of creation.

so evoution is exactly what you said, a theory. we can try to understand it, wether you choose to believe it or not is a personal choice. i personally see some truth in it. i respect all religions beliefs even if i dont personally agree with it.

    Clearly they can't.

And in response to one of the answerers above me,

Christianity is the belief that after the old testament, the Messiah promised by the prophets, did in fact come. The story goes that he was born in Bethlehem to the virgin Mary. He allegedly performed many miracles such as turning water to wine. Was apparently betrayed by Jesus after the last supper and was crucified by Romans. Allegedly died for our 'sins'. Rose from the dead around Easter time.

That's it in a nutshell really.

The answerer above me clearly doesn't realize that many atheists were Christians once.

It's truly sad that the closest to a correct answer (from Angeltress) was still nothing but a straw man combined with a bunch of red herrings /and/ holding it against science that scientists change their conclusions to fit the facts.

Chemical reactions with added electricity during the firey creation of our world spawned single celled organisms that eventually changed in reaction to their ever more diverse enviorments to gain an edge in the survival of the fittest until it spawned larger and more unique organisms [including us humans(homo sapiens sapiens)] until it developed the world we lived into today.

Source(s): I believe in evolution and I am Christian; to me God creating such unique creatures in such a complex way that eventually led to such a diverse world is the greatist proof that God exists.

Hold up, I need to find some bailing twine to tie my hands in a way that I can resist typing the answer.

Eyes up Simon, he addressed creationists, not Christians.

Source(s): Atheist It's when a mut-- found it.

Okay, well, I'm not, strictly speaking, a "creationist". I'm just a Christian. I have, however, watched and listened as you science types have tried to explain these ideas to those of us who are...let's say...skeptical.

So, I'll give it a try.

Correct me if I am wrong here, but the idea I get from internet "scientists" in forums like this one, is that, starting with a single living cell, it takes millions of years of minute, barely perceptible changes for that one cell to develop into a multi-celled organism.

    And that's just the beginning.

From there, more untold millions of years of tiny changes, bit by bit, until we have the diversity of life we see today.

As proof of this, we have a couple of hundred or so fossils...it seems that every dead critter does not leave a fossil behind...which is just as well, or we'd be up to our eyebrows in fossils...so we have to base our conclusions on the few we have. There might be some other explanations for some of the similarities we observe in these fossils, and there are still lots of blank spots in the "record", but nevertheless, we are quite sure that we will eventually fill all of those blank spots and refute every other possible explanation, because....um...well, because science says so, and science never changes it's mind.

Except in a few cases...like Pluto...but then there was "new evidence" to consider, and...

    um....

Well, it's true because my science text book says that it is true, and I believe what it says.

While we're at it, let's address a couple of other "mysteries" that some internet scientists claim to have found the answers to, shall we?

How did the universe come into being?

Well, haven't you ever heard of the Big Bang? Obviously there must have been an explosion, because the universe (which is infinite) is still expanding. We know that it is expanding, because things keep moving further apart.

What does infinite mean? Well, it means that it goes on forever, as in it is everything that exists.

Expanding into...um...well, it's just getting bigger, that's all...and who says infinity can't expand? It just is, that's all, my science book says so, so anyone who thinks it isn't must be wrong.

And then there is the ever-controversial favorite:

    How did life get started?

    Abiogenesis.

Nobody seems to be really very clear about how abiogenesis works, but we've been told that science is getting close to creating proto-life so it must be so. Of course, they are using pre-existing materials, and no, there hasn't been any real progress as producing a real living, self-replicating single cell yet, so don't hold your breath for anything terribly complicated.

After all, we are only scientists, here, we aren't God, you know!!

    Ummm....

    Well, alrightie then.

Any Creationist website will tell you they cannot. They think it has to do with monkeys turning human, and cats giving birth to dogs. I blame the education system.
