Yes you can. Federal Law backed up by the FCC (which regulates the entire telecom industry) mandates BY LAW you can take your number wherever you want. That doesn't mean things can't go wrong. Here is how to minimize that possibility.
DO NOT CANCEL your Verizon account UNTIL this process is FULLY COMPLETE. An do not tell Verizon you are porting out. Let Virgin Mobile do all the work. They are the ones getting your business and should try to do what they can to please a new customer. Verizon on the other hand, has no incentive to give your number porting a priority because they are losing your business.
Call Virgin Mobile or go online. Live activation costs $10. Online is free.
Request your number to be ported.
Wait until it shows up on your Virgin . Test it to your satisfaction (have friends call you and vice versa..
NOW, cancel your up until now , still active Verizon account.
Done.
As a new Virgin Mobile user, let me give you some advice.
1)PAY WITH TOPUPS ONLY. NEVER use a credit card, debit card or Paypal to pay them. They have been known to overcharge cards/accounts on file. It is very difficult to get refunds after the fact.
2) MAKE SURE you have enough MONEY in your account to pay all taxes/misc charges. I have seen it TOO many times. A teen buys their text plan at 19.99. Cheaps out and pays only $20. That penny is NOT going to cover taxes , let alone other fees. VM automatically switches to regular non plan (expensive )rates. Because there is still money in the account, the user still calls/texts assuming blindly that they are still on their plan. They get a rude shock when suddenly their phone stops working before the end of the plan cycle when they run out of money. IF they had paid that few extra cents on top of the base price, this would never have happened.
3)Relates to rule 2. CHECK your account to MAKE sure it is the plan YOU want. Not one VM is foisting you through default. Especially be careful whenever you make the payments. Check off the right options.
Virgin Mobile has strong /weakpoints. Verizon obviously had enough weakpoints that you left them for VM, but enough strong points to have stayed in a contract. All carriers are like that . VM is no exception. By pointing out how to AVOID the most common ones I hope that it will enhance your enjoyment of the strong points.
Btw, if you have not activated or topped up yet, you can get 60 free minutes and maybe even some cash credit on your new VM account.
If you top up for the first time with at least $20 , use this code under
Kickbacks: copy and paste it.: bOJUQIop
Under promo enter code word: purple
If all goes well you should get both the minutes and credit.
Good luck and remember, the beauty of prepaid is that you can leave in one month if you don't find that it's for you!
Take care.

Hi, If you are in Australia, you can do that. It is allowed under a policy where consumers have the choice of choosing the operators without changing phone numbers. Please get in touch with the dealer or call the call center to confirm.

I don't think that you can keep your Verizon phone number because it's a different company.

Yes you can. Its called "Porting". It does not matter if you still might owe your current carrier you can port your number at anytime to a new provider.

Money doesn't grow on trees though, I'm sure they are picking the cheapest monthly plan.
