    It must pass the test of time. If it is remembered, studied and praised after 20 - 30 years or so then it should be considered a classic.

    A classic is something older than 10 years that is still remembered and is highly regarded as one of the best movies of all time.

    Cult classic is a fairly different thing.

    Godfather is the best classic
