I have a 2002 Ford mustang. I cannot get it out of Park. Anybody have any clue as to why?

Everything was fine. Went on a road trip as a truck driver. Came back and I couldn't get it out of park. I managed after a few pushing an pulls to get it out, but I parked it and it did it again. I was not parked on a hill. Any suggestions?

Agreed.. I have 02 (Ford)Mercury Cougar.. newer models have an electronic 'interlock' relay(or)solenoid? on the transmission. When you press the brake pedal do you hear or feel the 'click' on the shifter? ALSO Do your brakes light up? If so, it's probably NOT the interlock. That is usually the case when parked on a hill, one downside to automatics, right? If the interlock is good, I'd have to guess it'd be the tranny linkage.

Try turning the ignition on without starting, and putting it in neutral, and KEEPING it there with the e-brake on haha. Although you can't really trust the e-brake !

Do you have the owners manual? Im not sure if this is the same in the mustang but in my expedition in the owners manual it explains that there is a tab on the steering column should be centered with the center of the steering wheel. Pop this out with a screwdriver there is a switch and if you hit that it will let you shift out of park its an override so its not a permanent fix but should get you moving.

Check to see if your brake lights are working. If they are not then your brake light switch is bad. The brake light switch must show the brakes on to release the lock and allow you to shift from park.

It could be a steering wheel lock issue.

You have to try to figure out what way you turned the steering wheel (if this is the problem).

Once you have figured that out, turn the car on and turn the wheel a little farther the same direction. So if the wheel is locked because you turned it right, turn it right a little farther then back to regular position to unlock it.

    Hope this helps.

check the solenoid that won't let you shift out of park unless the brakes are on.
