what is the name of this nut I ate in Egypt?

It isn't actually the nut that you eat, but the shell. It is a dark brown and has a woody type of taste to it. It grows in a tree that looks like a palm, but it isn't a palm. It is often made into a drink or a tea. It is suppose to be very good for your liver and blood. I can't remember the name of it and it is driving me nuts - no pun intended.

Update:

I did not eat the Nut part, you eat the shell. Many people over there use it to make a drink which is a brownish colour.

Update 2:

It was not a date. I know dates. I found the answer elsewhere and it is called Dome.

Is it a DATE? Dates grow on palm-looking trees and is brown in color. You eat the fleshy portion (not really the shell) and the skin. It tastes good when made into tarts or pies, too.

Honey is right... it was probably dates. There are date palm groves all over Egypt. Fig trees grow in abundance there as well, but the trees look very different. The leaves sort of look like large clovers.

In Egypt you can get any fruit as a drink. It's wonderful to have fresh mango or apples juiced just minutes before you drink it! They have even found ancient date candy in some tombs. It is made with cinnamon and cardamom.
