It's 9 1/2", what should I do with it?

I just adopted a 9 1/2" pleco because I bought the tank he was in. The only problem is he was in a 30 gal tank (poor guy) and the biggest I have is a 55. This is my first big pleco and I know (pretty sure) he is South American. I was wondering how he would do in a 55 gallon tank with African Cichlids. I would like to keep him but more importantly I would like him to be happy and comfortable. I was told he is about 8-9 years old, does this sound accurate? Thanks in advance.

Update:

I have someone that is interested in it for their pond. We do live in FL, will it do ok in a pond. It still gets pretty cold here sometimes.

Update 2:

I was wondering about it needing to be heated. She said it's a very large pond and it can go deep for the winter to stay warm...but I still question it. And it is with koi, don't they require different temps?

The 55 gallon will be ok for him. Just watch for signs of stress, or any aggression from the cichlids.

He can't be in the pond unless it's heated. Buy a 120 gallon and put all of them in it.
