I mainly come on yahoo answers to provide and gain knowlege. I have only been caring for fish for about 6 months but I have asked a lot of questions and have done a lot of research. I enjoy posting my questions on here because I know there are many fish experts and I know a lot of you have had the same experiences as me. I also like to help with fish questions as much as I can. I currently own bettas, guppies, platies, black skirt and red-fin tetras, mollies and an algae eater.
I haven't used my aquarium magnet in over a year...?
I don't remember whether the yellow side goes inside the tank of if it's the green. Can someone tell me please? thank you
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoWe were told our dog has staph but we're not sure?
Our Jack Russell was scratching severely the last couple of years. The vet gave her allergies shots, steroids, and antihistamine. She then developed black spots on her belly that we first thought was dirt. The vet told us she has Staph infection. Shots weren't helping, so we put her on raw food. It helped her scratching a bit, but not much. We've tried specialty skin shampoo's and fish oil. We thought maybe its a reaction to too much yeast, so we took her off anything that would have flour. Still to no avail, the spots are spreading and her hair is coming out. She doesn't have patches of hair missing, just thinner hair all over. Any ideas? Has anyone been through this?
4 AnswersDogs1 decade agoNew to cichlids and I need a bit of advice please.?
I currently have :
4" red zebra,
2-1" red zebras,
2-1" Kenyis,
1" white (not sure of the name),
3" Johanni,
3" Gerbergi,
3" Peacock, and
3- 1 1/2" peacocks.
I have a 75 gallon tank to set up. I was thinking of putting the peacocks in their own tank. Would they do okay in the 75 with the others or should I go ahead and put them in their own tank? If I did put the peacocks in their own tank, would a 46 gal bow-front be okay?
6 AnswersFish1 decade agoGood tankmates for Kribs?
I want to get some Kribs but I want to know good tankmates. I do not want regular tropical fish like danios and tetras. I was wondering if they could be put other African cichlids. I have on peacock and several red zebras and Kenyis. The peacock is not currently in with the others. Can I keep Kribs with any of these or should I just keep a tank of Kribs? I am new to cichlids so I am still working it all out. Thanks.
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoYour opinion on canister filters...?
I just got a canister filter with a tank that I bought. I've never used one, I always use HOB filters. I was wondering what your opinions on canisters vs. HOB. Pros and cons? Thanks
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoQuestion about starting a new tank with old filter with Nitrates.?
I have a tank that has been set up for about a month. It was started with some new and some older water from another tank. It is my fry tank, and yes it is overcrowded, but I'm working on that. I vacuumed the gravel the other day and there wasn't much waste (surprisingly), but my nitrates are high. I know that is probably a combo of being new and overcrowded. My question is, would it be okay to start a new tank with the filter from this tank with nitrates? Since it is new water do you think it would hurt anything, or do you think it would help with cycling process? Please don't scold me on overcrowdedness of the tank, it will be taken care of within the next couple of days ;o) Thanks
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoIt's 9 1/2", what should I do with it?
I just adopted a 9 1/2" pleco because I bought the tank he was in. The only problem is he was in a 30 gal tank (poor guy) and the biggest I have is a 55. This is my first big pleco and I know (pretty sure) he is South American. I was wondering how he would do in a 55 gallon tank with African Cichlids. I would like to keep him but more importantly I would like him to be happy and comfortable. I was told he is about 8-9 years old, does this sound accurate? Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoI have had high nitrates in my tank for a while and not sure what is best.?
I have a 46 gallon bowfront community tank that has been set up since September. I didn't have any problems with it until the last couple of months. I moved out of town for a job and am only able to take care of the tank on the weekends when I come home. The last 2 months I have had extremely high nitrates and very low ph. I'm not as concerned with the ph as I am the nitrates. I do water changes on the weekend...sometimes 20-30 percent. It never helps. Last weekend I did 30 percent, but no improvement. I'm wondering if I should do a larger water change this weekend. I have not added anything to the tank, or removed, except for several fish that I've lost due to the problem. I don't know what is causing such high nitrates. One thing that came to mind was the amount of Ramshorns snails I have in the tank. A LOT of them get stuck to the filter and I know their bodies often get sucked out. Could they have any effect on my water? There are probably 100 or so in there. I'm taking a lot out to give away. Please let me know as I do not want to lose any more of my stock if possible. Thank you!
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoMy molly has a tumor-like object on his face....?
I have a black molly that has a white tumor-like thing on the side of his face. He has had it for a couple of months now but it appears to be getting larger and now he is becoming mopey. What do think the cause is and can it be fixed? Thanks for your help.
1 AnswerFish1 decade agoNew clown chasing damsel...?
I got a new clown fish from a friend of mine. She is larger than my other 2 clowns and she has been constantly chasing my little 3-stripe damsel. Are they playing or is she trying to hurt it? I just got the new clown yesterday evening. I don't want to get rid of the clown or the damsel, but I may have to I guess? Any suggestions?
I have a 30 gal with 2 small damsels, 1 firefish goby, and 3 clowns.
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoWhat is this disease? Is it TB?
I've had this same thing happen to 2 of my fish from this tank a couple of months ago. The fish is bending down and I don't know what is causing this. Right now it is swimming fine but the others were before they got too bad. I'm hoping it isn't TB. I am actually moving the fish from this tank to another tank and I don't my other fish harmed/infected. Any ideas of what may be causing this? It scares me, I don't want to lose all of my other fish but I need to sell my other tank. Help please! Here is the link to the picture of my glofish with the problem. Note: the previous 2 fish that died from this were a swordtail and a guppy.
1 AnswerFish1 decade agoShould I get convict cichlids?
What do you think of them? I have someone that is interested in trading me some baby convicts for some guppy and platy fry. I've been wanting to get cichlids for a while but was looking into African. What are some pros and cons you can tell me about convicts besides that they breed like rabbits. What is your opinion of them? Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoHow did this starfish get in my tank?
I have a saltwater tank that I was cleaning this morning. As I was scraping algae I noticed a very, VERY small 1/4" starfish on the glass. Not sure how he got there, they only thing I can figure is he hitched a ride on rock I purchased, but I haven't purchased rock in about 6 weeks. I have no idea what type of starfish as I have only been doing saltwater for about 3 months. Anyway, the poor little guy has one "arm" missing and a tiny chunk missing out of 2 other "arms." I would like to keep him if he is not harmful, but I am afraid my fish will pick on him until he is dead. Any assistance would be great! Also, he appears to be off white/tan in color...not sure if this would help.
6 AnswersFish1 decade agoWhat to do with fish and tank after possible case of TB?
I just terminated 2 of my fish that I think may have had TB. Both were bent down at the spine and the tail fin was closed, not spread out. One stayed at the top and one hid. I'm not 100% sure it was TB but I want to be cautious. What should I do to the other fish from that tank and to the tank itself? Is it safe to move some of the fish to another tank or could that be dangerous? Please, any advice or experience with this would be helpful. Thank you
5 AnswersFish1 decade agoAquarium sealant question.?
I read the tube where it says to let the sealant cure for 48 hours before filling with water, but I'm not using it on the aquarium itself. I am making a 3 section divider for my bettas and I just want to use it on the plexi dividers. Do you think I still need to wait the 48 hour because I really needed to get them moved to the big tank today. Will it be okay seeing as I'm not using it on the aquarium to support the weight of water?
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoSaltwater Angelfish question.?
I recently set up a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium. I have 10-15 lbs of live rock, 2 false-percula clowns and 2 damsels. I am wanting to slowly add more rock, more fish and some corals. I would like to include an angelfish to my list of fish to get. The 2 angels I like the most are the Flame angel and the Coral Beauty angel. For those who have had experience with them, which do you recommend and what are some pros and cons of them? Thanks!
Let me know if you need more details.
5 AnswersFish1 decade agoAngel fish attacked a tetra...?
I have a quarter-sized angel in a large community tank with guppies, platies, and tetras. I noticed my angel nipping at one of by black skirt tetras and it looks as if it must have been doing in for a while because the tetra was just moving very slowly and was leaning a bit. I separated the tetra but I'm not sure if there is something I should give him to help him or do I just have to wait it out and see how he does?
Thanks in advance
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoNeed advice on moving fish to a new non-cycled tank...?
I am moving this weekend and set up a 46 g tank at my new place. I need to move 3 10 gallon tanks of fish into this 46 g tank within the next few days. The problem is the 46 g was just set up yesterday. What is the best way to get my fish and bacteria in the new tank without causing a large chemical spike. I originally thought I had a couple of weeks to have the new tank set up but...oops. I was thinking of taking out my filters and bringing them and also vacuuming some of the gravel and pouring that into the tank.... Advice please... Thanks!

7 AnswersFish1 decade agoRamshorn snail eggs?
I found 2 ramshorn egg sacks in one of my tropical tanks. One is stuck to the tank and one is on the bottom of a small bridge. I want to make sure some babies survive but the tank has tetras and a betta in it. Can I move the bridge to a safer tank? I have a 5 gallon tank with fry in it, or a I have a 1 gallon tank that is not in use. Which would be best? If I put them in the 1 gallon do they need a filter before they hatch? Any info would be great as this is the first time any of my snails have laid eggs. ( I only have one snail in each tank, but this particular snail is new, I've only had it a week Thanks!
