Your opinion on canister filters...?
I just got a canister filter with a tank that I bought. I've never used one, I always use HOB filters. I was wondering what your opinions on canisters vs. HOB. Pros and cons? Thanks
It's for a 55 gallon freshwater.

i personally HATE my new canister other then the fact that its silent...i used to have a HOB and it was so easy to take care of and the tank was cleaner. canister filters are quiet, but they are a pain in the *** to clean! make sure you know how to do it before you end up with half your tank water all over your floor like i did! the only bad thing about HOB is that they are noisy.

There isn't anything too good or bad when comparing canister vs. HOB if you have a freshwater tank.
For a saltwater tank, if you have the money and time, most people prefer a "sump." You can customize it and it is open, so cleaning is theoretically easier.

I love them. IMO, they are better than HOBs in the fact that there is usually a lot more room for filter media, thus making them way more affective. They are easy to clean as well.
I have used many different types of filters and my fluvals are by far my favorite.

I love mine. It is the XP3 from Rena. It can handle 175 gallons, easy to rinse, hides very nicely. Guess it depends on the size of your tank, and what you have for room behind and below as well.
