Does my PC have to be on for my PS3 to connect to the Internet?

O.k. I have a Zoom ADSL modem/wi-fi router combo unit plugged into my laptop PC. I also have a PS3 that I have been trying to get connected to the Internet for 6 months with no success. I have tried both wired and wireless connections with limited success. The PS3 will usually pass a connection test but then fail connecting to the Playstation Network and will always get stuck/time out when downloading updates.

Does my PC have to be turned on and connected to the Internet in order for my PS3 to connect to the web?

It shouldn't be this difficult to set up a home network. I was told the PS3 was easy to set up and was basically a second computer. My friend has one and says he never has problems. He has a desktop PC whereas I have a laptop PC with a wired connection into the aforementioned modem/router.

Any advice?

Update:

It's a brand new ADSL modem/WI-Fi router combo.

it does not have to be on as long as your modem is running.

You may need to check the settings on your PS3 through the main menu. You may need to turn it to a wired connection or a wireless connection. You will also need to check your router if it has wireless on it. Your PC has nothing to do with the connection of the PS3 it's your router.

I had the same issue. Unfortunately we had to get a better (newer) router for the timing out/ connection problems to go away. Try updating the firmware on your router and see if that clears things up.
