Method for Cleaning Leather Gloves?

I am going spelunking (aka caving/underground hiking) and I need to get my gloves as clean as possible. I don't want to ruin the leather but I would like to clean most of the dirt off. Can I soak them in water or a cleaning solution?

Depends on the leather. Try just drying the dirt, then beating the gloves against a fencepost or something to loosen the dirt up a bit, then vacuuming.

I use roughout leather gloves for gardening -- when they get too gross, I hose them off, run them through the washer, and then put them on and work hand lotion or neatsfoot oil into them. Some gloves tolerate the treatment, others.. well... they're at least cleaner. <g>

Are they smooth leather? Roughout? Suede? Do you know the maker (who can give you the best instructions for their product.)

They weren't invented back when I was caving, but I think if I were to go again, I'd bring a pair of sealskinz.

If you're going to be rappelling, you need extra leather across the palms, ime.
