Light bulb spark, will it cause a fire?
My mum just turned off the lights and all of a sudden a spark flew out and landed on the ground - she's worried that it will cause a fire and we've had to delay going out.
It wasn't any more than one spark (I saw) and I'm sure that it won't cause a fire...?
By the way, we have wooden floor boards that we haven't 'polished' yet so there are slim, small gaps between.
She's getting worried in case the spark has went between the gap... but she's mopped the floor so it's kind of wet now.
It was a ceiling light, and no nothing is 'seriously' wrong with it. The fuse went - my mum brought it back though. I don't think my mum has experienced a house fire before, but she is very paranoid. She always is ;)

This could not have caused a floor to burst into flames as it would be so small that it would have cooled instantly on contact with the wood.
Your mother seems very over cautious - maybe she has had some sort of house fire before?

A spark exists only for a fraction of a second.
A spark doesn't sit around for minutes or hours still active. It can only exist for very briefly.
You didn't give enough information about what kind of lights were turned off. Ceiling lights or table lamp. If the spark was from a table lamp, then throw it out!! If it sparks like that, something is seriously wrong.
If i was ceiling light, where the wiring is inside the wall, then your place/home is in great danger. For something to spark to where it went out onto the floor, that can cause a fire in the wall at anytime, especially when you're sleeping. It means that the wires are hitting something and causing the huge spark, even tho' it was "only once". Some spark that huge can cause a fire to burn down the place.
A lamp which causes that much spark is also dangerous, but you can unplug the damn thing and get rid of it. But if it's when you flip a wall switch that you got that spark, you DESPERATELY need to call an electrician to examine the problem. Do NOT try and fix yourself, or have an friend do it. Only experienced and licensed electrician should work on it. It's deadly serious.
But once a spark comes out, it will die immediately. But if it sparks inside a wall, it can ignite a fire inside it.

When a light bulb pops the sparks that fly from the bulb are hot enough to burn paper and cloth. However the chances of this happening are very low, the main thing to do is turn the lights off when there is nobody in the house.

Hi there
I would not worry one bit
the bulb has blown & the spark you saw might look big as it takes you by surprise
But in fact it is a very small bit that does it and would have faded out as soon as it landed
Just get out & enjoy ya day while the weathers ok
You WILL have a home to come back to.
All the best

If the spark came out of the light switch, have it replaced.
If it came out of an overhead light, call an electrician.SOON.
Meantime - Make sure your smoke alarms are operational.

Next time the spark goes off, try to stand under it and you might not even have to go out after that.

I would stay in the house for at least 5 days as this spark seems really dangerous.
