Making a living with eBay?

If you believe everything you read, there are many people who are making a fortune by selling things on eBay.

I've sold a few items from around the house, such as books and CDs. I've bought some things too. I've had good experiences as a buyer and a seller, and I know the procedure. I have a scale to weigh things accurately, and some forms that can be used to print out shipping labels.

But what I want to know is: Realistically, can anyone make a decent living this way? Could someone earn something like $2,000 to $5,000 per month, if they approach eBay sales like a full-time job?

I'd be especially interested in hearing from anyone who tried it and succeeded, or who tried it and then gave up.

If you have a good supplier and marketing the correct products, you can make a good income. Now "good" to me is 2-3K a month in my area.

Electronics and Telecom are saturated badly. Unless you have a great marketing scheme and can offer perfect products for less than the rest, you won't make it here.

Clothing is good, provided it is brand new and cheap.

Oddities sell well...people have a penchant for things out of the norm. So if it looks weird or indifferent to you, it may sell well.

Collectors items are good, too..old Coke bottles, baseball cards, etc.

I wouldn't do it, mabye every now and then just to get some extra cash, but i wouldn't expect to make a living off of it. my mom lost her job and she thought that instead of getting a job she can make cakes and sell stuff off of ebay. i realize that she hasn't been working too hard with it which might be the problem, but she hasn't made more than $400 in the past like, 6 months at least.

The only reason I had to give up is because it kept me too busy since I have kids, I just didn't have the time.
