Did the latest Windows update mess up your machine?

Question

Last night when I turned off my XP machine for the night, it displayed the message that it was going to install updates and then turn off.  When I turned it on this morning, I had the machine's original default desktop background and icons, all my quickstart programs were gone, Firefox took me to the web page you get when you first install it, and all my bookmarks, add-ons and custom settings were gone. 
I have an Athlon XP3200 machine and before the update it was running XP SP3.  I did a system restore back to last week, and everything looks fine.  I was just wondering if the update affected anyone else this way?

first of all.... Hi there !! I have read your question with interest. Mainly because i looked at your profile... and your status,. How many updates did you receive ?? ... Or maybe you did not get chance to see this before the system did a reinstall. Yet again looking at your status, I have to say that you are the type of person who should be trying out Windows 7. However... I am not asking you to do that if you only have One computer. because things can go wrong, even on the very latest release.... And just to clarify that i am not Knocking you in any way.... Windows 7 did exactly that on my computer yesterday... Thousands of us will be asking new Questions very shortly about Windows 7. Do us all a favour... Please... Down load it, use it .... ( its pretty good ).. And Help !!    Your problem ?  more than likely an incompatibility with internet explorer 8.  cheers and massive respect to you.

I have two laptops they are vista and the updates went smoothly on those,not a single problem.
