I always thought it was "ashes to ashes and dust to dust"!! I'm like you we're soon going to have more dead people than alive!! I often wondered where all this hoopla we go through now started and who got rich off it!!! Good question!!

That is assuming that everyone gets their own little plot, tombstone, you name it.

It's become much more popular these days to have options other than a traditional cemetery. You can cremate someone and put their remains in what's called a "columbarium," which is basically a wall with little niches for cremains and a plaque that goes over it. You can "bury" dozens of people in a columbarium using the same space as a cemetery plot. You don't even need a columbarium, a lot of people just have their ashes spread these days.

There are also John Does - people who die unidentified, who are buried very close together or even in mass graves. Some people donate their bodies to science and may or may not have anything left to cremate or bury.

Lastly, while you might worry about the space cemeteries take up, chances are we all walk over burial grounds completely unaware. Many cemeteries (and the people in them) become forgotten, the headstones disappear and deteriorate, and the land gets reused for something else. In Denver, CO, the city's botanic gardens is on the land of the old city cemetery - and so many headstones were lost or were never put up, that whenever they expand they usually find a body or two.

Good question and Good answers. Now lets go back to the beginning of people, there have been deaths of people ever since and some cultures had different ways of burying their dead, some were put in the ground with only a stick or stones to mark it others were never marked. Some were buried in caves, and some were put in hollowed out trees. Some were drowned in different bodies of water and never found, some were eaten by wild life. And as time went on, so did people to the more current times. Now as was said before, we have more options now- so there will be more who choose not to be in a Cemetery.

Not everyone gets buried - some opt for cremation and body donation to medical school which is followed by cremation. Remember that not all graves are just one coffin deep. You can put as many as three in the same spot on top of each other. In places like the old cemeteries in New Orleans, the families rented a space in a "drying wall" where the bodies were slid into slots until they were just bones and then the bones were put in a bag and put in the family tomb. Hundreds of family members could be enclosed in one small mausoleum.

Believe me there are a lot of cemetery's around. But not a lot of people are buried. A lot more these days now opt for cremation.

Double dumping , or burying on top of very old old graves is not unusual, and the rise in cremation has sorted out a lot of the problems.

A lot of people are not buried. Both of my parents were cremated and their ashes spread in the ocean.
