Why aren't hockey goals fastened to the ice in the NHL?

One would think it would keep the goal from sliding around when players are near the goal.

They used to have more rigid posts back in the earlier days of hockey; but as others have indicated; way too many injuries. Neck and Face and Teeth related.

Can you imagine how many defence men let alone goalies a team would go through due to injuries? And the zambonies need to be able to deal with the ice in between periods.

The goal net posts are sitting on 4inch rubber protrusions that bend and give way when a player does a head dive into it. Better not to break necks with my dear....

So if somebody crashes into the net, there it is a less likely chance of injury to that player(s).

no they arent attached to the ice because of safety reasons. the same reason they use break away bases in baseball. for safety. and for ice resurfacign reasons. and most rinks are not always iced.
