Is it rude to be 23 minutes late for a dinner appointment?

Yesterday my aunt and her husband invited me and my sister for a dinner in a restaurant, it was quite a sudden invitation since she called me at 1 PM and the dinner was at 7 PM, it was my sister who accepted the invitation and she didn't know that I had something small to do around 3 AM, I thought it was no problem since my business would not take longer than 2 hours but I finally came home at 6.15, when I got the news that my aunt had already arrived in the restaurant (WTF?!) had quick shower and dressed, and went to the place at 6.40, we caught by traffic and arrived late at 7.23, My sister and I had a fight and she blamed me of our lateness? was I being rude and disrespectful?

According to etiquette you are allowed to be 15 minutes to late. They call this the academic 15 minutes, You was being disrespectful to your aunt and to your aunt only. What was worse according to etiquette is starting a fight. So your sister was more at fault than you. Because the normal procedure is the offer your apologies, sit down and pretend nothing actually happened. Do not explain yourself, apologies and carry on.

eer eek, couldn't you have called at like 6:55 and told her that you wre running late? (do you have a cell phone). Stuff like this happens sometimes. It's understandable - just apologize apologize apologize!!!

If things occurred as you stated, then NO, you were not rude to be late for the appointment.

Well, that depends on the person, the relationships and the atmosphere.

If there is a good reason, there should be no problem.

No, I don't think this is too bad, but you could have rung before you left and let her know you were running late.

That was not your fault. She was probably just venting.
