Using another case/power supply as an external drive bay?
I have several mid-tower sized computer cases and power supplies. I also have several hard drives. In addition, I have a computer with extra IDE connections on the motherboard (to act as a server).
Here's what I'd like to do... I'd like to put the hard drives into one case with a power supply I know how to short the correct leads so that I don't have to have a motherboard in the case to make the power go on) and run a ribbon cable from that case to the case with the motherboard. This way I can add an additional 4 drives to my system without having them all in one case.
Can any computer gurus out there tell me if this is going to be a problem, or will this work as I have it planned? How about doing the same with SATA drives (possible future endeavor)

Just get external hard drive enclosures. They're much easier to work with. And you need to deal with the limitation of the maximum cable-length that ATA has to work with (you should have gotten SCSI drives :P ) Also, sloppy hardware hacks like that are never worth their time.
