Proper transliteration from Russian Cyrillic into the Latin alphabet?
When transliterating Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet into the Latin alphabet (not translation of words, but simply writing the Russian language using the Latin alphabet), how should the masculine genitive ending of an adjective (-ого) be transliterated. The nearest letter-for-letter equivalent would be -ogo while the pronunciation would suggest -ovo.
For example, would it be proper to transliterate "Парк Горького" as Park Gorkogo or Park Gorkovo?
2 AnswersLanguages8 years agoLiquid cooling Systems?
I've been looking for some time at getting a liquid cooling system for my computer. As it is, I have to run with the case open and a fan blowing into it (3 case fans apparently aren't enough, particularly during summer). I'm trying to keep the cost under $100 if possible.
Has anyone used the Bigwater cooling system? What kind of temperature reduction did you see over a standard heat sink and fan? How about other options in that general price range?
My CPU is an Athlon X2 5400. I've got an AMD-recommended fan that I bought bundled with it from NewEgg, but it just isn't cutting it.
2 AnswersDesktops1 decade agoIAC valve on a 2002 Saturn SL1?
I have a 2002 Saturn SL1. I was having some performance problems and was getting the "service engine soon" light and took it to an auto parts place to get the codes read. The codes pointed to the EGR valve and the IAC valve. I cleaned out the EGR really good and the car was running fine again for a while (had to do this 2-3 more times before I finally just replaced it). I also replaced the IAC valve. After replacing it, I started having problems with high idle speeds. I finally found out that the pintle shaft is supposed to be adjusted to a maximum length before installation. However, I have no idea what length to set it to and the old one is long gone.
Does anyone know what length it should be set to and/or where I can find this info. Its not listed in my Haynes manual for the car.
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoThighs ache when working out?
For some time now, when I climb stairs, walk uphill, or try to exercise on a stairmaster or eliptical machine, I have been experiencing extreme discomfort and aches in my thighs. The pain is a little above my kneecap on the front portion of the thigh. It makes it very difficult to exercise.
I've been trying to lose weight for a while now. I stand 5'6 and weigh about 250. I have relatively short legs (29" inseam) and have just thought it was a matter of leverage (shorter legs=less leverage) and that it would improve with exercise. However, after over a month of exercising three times per week (mostly using an elipitcal and treadmill), I have noticed no improvement whatsoever. I would expect at least a little improvement, the ability to go a little longer, a little less achiness. But I feel no change.
My typical routine is 10 minutes on the elipitcal at low-setting (about all my thighs can bear) followed by a full mile or more of fast walking on the treadmill (running hurts my back and has since high school, when I was in fairly good shape).
I really want to get in better shape. However, the achiness in my thighs really prevents me from working out more.
2 AnswersOther - Health1 decade agoWhy would a cop handcuff someone having a seizure?
Today is the first anniversary of a friend of mine having a seizure which lead to his diagnosis of a brain tumor (he's actually doing very well, had the tumor removed, and prognosis is excellent). On his blog, a friend posted her eyewitness account of his seizure.
Someone had called 911 and a cop was the first on the scene. Shortly after the seizure, with an EMT present, he actually handcuffed the person who'd had the seizure (and was apparently not quite back to normal, was still out of it).
My question is this: is this normal/standard practice? Is it done to prevent them from hurting themselves and/or others? I question this, because it seems that they could very easily hurt themselves more if restrained during a seizure. As long as people stand back and there are no dangerous objects in close proximity (this was in an office/cubicle setting), I can't imagine this being a good practice.
Any EMT's or medical/law enforcement professionals out there care to shed some light on this?
3 AnswersMedicine1 decade agoUsing another case/power supply as an external drive bay?
I have several mid-tower sized computer cases and power supplies. I also have several hard drives. In addition, I have a computer with extra IDE connections on the motherboard (to act as a server).
Here's what I'd like to do... I'd like to put the hard drives into one case with a power supply I know how to short the correct leads so that I don't have to have a motherboard in the case to make the power go on) and run a ribbon cable from that case to the case with the motherboard. This way I can add an additional 4 drives to my system without having them all in one case.
Can any computer gurus out there tell me if this is going to be a problem, or will this work as I have it planned? How about doing the same with SATA drives (possible future endeavor)
1 AnswerOther - Hardware1 decade agotwo wireless routers?
I am having problems with my wireless internet getting good coverage through the entire house. Due to the placement of furniture and connection points, I have to have the router in one particular room in one corner of the house. In the opposite corner, upstairs, my connection is poor.
I happen to have a second wireless router, and I'd like to set this second one up to cover the upstairs.
The way I'm trying to arrange them, I have the original one downstairs as it is, attached to the cable "modem" box. Both routers are 4-port wired routers as well), and I've taken a line of cat-5 cable (all cables tested to work without problem) and run it upstairs to where the other router is plugged in. When I do that, it seems to not be picking up its IP address from the DHCP server on the first router. I have them both set to different SSID's and passwords (both are WPA-PSK). I can even connect wirelessly to the second router, but the internet connection doesn't come through. I've tried setting it up through the router's home page, the autodetect doesn't detect and setting it to no username/password (the internet connection doesn't require one) doesn't do it either. Again, it doesn't seem to be getting an IP address from the first modem, even though its set to pick one up.
Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?
4 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoMy cough won't go away?
In mid-February I went to see a doctor at a walk-in clinic (I have no insurance and very little money). I was diagnosed with bronchitis and put on an antibiotic and a codeine-based cough syrup. The severe symptoms, including tightness in my chest, are gone... but the cough hasn't entirely left.
I suffer from frequent (once an hour or more) coughing fits. Primarily it's triggered by a tickle in the throat. The cough starts simple, but quickly becomes wet and raspy sounding. Sometimes a little phlegm comes up, not always. I've been taking Mucinex, which has had very little effect. The codeine cough syrup is gone and regular cough syrups don't do much good at night when I'm trying to sleep.
I can't afford to go to the doctor again... any ideas what the cause is and what I can do about it?
2 AnswersRespiratory Diseases1 decade agoDrop in blood pressure - I feel weird, is this normal?
My blood pressure has been running in the 140/100 range, unregulated, since I lost my medical insurance. I recently had to see a doctor due to a bout of bronchitis. When she took my blood pressure it was 170/113. She agrees that it was almost certainly due to being sick, but if its been running in the 140/100 range I should be on medication again. She put me on a diuretic and it dropped, literally overnight, to 112/72.
I feel woozy, deflated, and a bit out of it. A family member told me that's probably due to the immediate drop in blood pressure and my body not having re-acclimated to the lower pressure.
Is this normal? How long can I expect to be feeling weird like this, or should I be talking to the doctor again already?
5 AnswersHeart Diseases1 decade agoOccasional stabbing pain when breathing?
As long as I can remember, from time to time I will get, with no warning, a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest when breathing. I'll breathe in and suddenly its like someone has shoved a needle through my chest. It can happen on either side of my chest and its always in the same location on one side or the other, right at the base of the rib cage. When it happens, I can't breathe for a second or two, as breathing in causes the pain, but then it goes away.
This happens at random times, does not appear to be more frequent with exercise, and does not appear to be caused by any activity. It also leaves no lingering after effects, other than I feel a little hesitant to breathe for a few moments, wondering if it will come back.
Does anyone else experience this? I've mentioned it to doctors a few times, but none of them ever had an explanation. They just told me to tell them if it gets worse or chronic.
