What could a swishing noise be?

For many years, I have been hearing a swishing noise in my head. No kidding, I'm serious. I have been through every test you can imagine and the Drs. are stumped. They have no answers. I have no other symptoms, just the swishing noise every so often. Does anyone else experience this? By the way, the Dr. says it has nothing to do with any ear abnormality.

I've had a problem with tinnitus (ringing in the ears) for many years and one of the interesting things I read about it was that some people hear swishing noises because the carotid artery is so close to the inner ear. What they're hearing is the blood rushing through the artery. Everyone's anatomy is a little different (as to placement of vessels, etc.) so in some people that artery lies closer to the inner ear than other individuals. If you've had everything checked out and there is no other abnormality, count yourself lucky in only hearing the swishing occasionally. My ringing is constant in both ears---like a high pitched whine. I pretty much try to ignore it and stay away from caffeine and salt which can increase the volume. Hope this helps!

maybe there's a bug in your ear? There was an ant in my ear once and i heard a swishy noise when it moved.

What you are "hearing" is the blood circulating within your ear.
