Is it hard to learn German?

So this fall im gonna take the basic intro class to german and wondered if it was hard. I bought a book to try and get a mini headstart on it. I'm just scared it would be hard to learn since German has an odd sounding language. I knew some french for a while and hoped to learn something new and to stick with it if i like it. Any advice or anything? :)

It depends... If your really determined it wouldn't be too hard but if you aren't determined ofcourse its gonna be hard! Just do your best and it'll be just easy! Or maybe do some research first so it'll be easy when you'll go to your basic intro class!

Personally, I think German is easy and a lot of fun. I've been learning French also, and I find German to be more complicated grammatically than French or English, but in a good way. How you order your words in a sentence is very flexible, and the pronunciation is pretty easy, easier than French. It's very straightforward and consistent, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

If you want a language easier than German, go with Swedish or Norwegian. Once you get past some pronunciation quirks, they're pretty easy.

An intro course for German is probably much easier than one in French or Spanish, etc. because German is closer to English than Romantic languages are.

German has a lot of words that look really similar to english. Ich habe gelernen Deutsch. I have learned German. Mann means man Schule means school Buch means Book and some others. I have only done 3 lessons of German but I already know how to conjugate and somewhat about indefinite and definite articles.

I too took german and found it easier to learn then french or spanish. I always had trouble with making my r's roll in spanish and to speak french correctly I felt like I was talking through my nose. Practice makes perfect. You can't just read a book about german you need to practice saying the words. The more you practice the easier it will be I hope this helps.

Well I can only tell you of my experience. I didn't find it hard in fact it was quite easy. A lot of the vocabulary is similar to English and many of the simpler sentences too.

On the negative side German grammar is quite complicated since we as English speakers never have to bother with cases, genders, and such. And then there's the issue of word placement, but no worries after a while you get used to it.

Grammar is hard, like word placement and stuff...but otherwise it's not so bad. I'm learning it myself.
