what is your opinion on a government subsidy for i.v.f. treatments?

I'm giving a speech on the matter tomorrow afternoon, and I'm very strongly opinionated, I've only just stopped to consider that I never asked anyone what their opinion was on the matter. So I'm wondering, do you think the government should, or should not, give a subsidy for couples receiving the I.V.F. treatment? and why do you hold this view?

personally I am against the subsidy. (also i'm not sure if I'm spelling subsidy right). I wont say why, as I fear too many people will go automatically into defence mode rather than an open discussion.

I don't know where you are, but I'm from the UK, and here a lot of people can get IVF for free on the NHS. I do not support my taxes being used for people to add more and more people to an already over-populated world. There are so many better things my money could be used for, like people with proper life threatening illnesses, or improving schools or whatever.

At the end of the day, a child is a gift not a right, and as such the government should not be providing anything towards the cost of IVF treatment. After all, if you want a kid that much and can't afford the IVF, there are loads of kids out there waiting to be adopted. I don't understand why individuals or the government believe that they should be entitled to use taxes to fund something that is not a right, is not an essential part of their life, and is not a life-threatening condition. If people are really that bothered about having a child, they should pay for the IVF themselves. Like I said, what's to stop them adopting if they can't have kids naturally?
