Why do online videos force you to watch the commercials?

it really irritates me.

for example, i'll watch a video on MTV and they've got this lock on the streaming bar when the commercials play. you can't skip it or pause it. i really hate advertisements-- they're f*kin everywhere. i mean, they've got them all around the website and they still force you to watch them in the video

That's how they're able to make money. If I was a sponsor, I sure wouldn't want you to be able to skip my advertisement either.

websites cost money. free stuff isn't very helpful with the paying of the bills. youtube is good for ad-freeness, if of questionable video quality.
