What is going on with my 7.3L, what would be the most likely cause?

89 F250 XLT with 237K on the motor.

I'm coming home from work. Stop at a T intersection, make a left turn. Proceed to accelerate uphill. and all of a sudden, its like someone switched off the key. I coast to a stop, pop the hood, drop the fuel filter, its full. Spritz some ether into the air cleaner, turn it over...... Na da... Motor seems to turn over MUCH faster. Strikes me as a sudden loss of compression. So I'm thinking timing chain or Cam, but I'm no diesel mechanic. What say all of you? (About the motor - not me)

Update:

Let me be a litlle clearer...... Its a D I E S E L........... There is NO iginition system!

Possibly a/the lift pump - (did you try the/do you have a - second tank?) but do the easiest/cheapest stuff first.

See if there's leakage around the injectors. Make sure the fuel pump is working. Change the fuel filter. Make sure air is bled out. Check/change the air filter. Make sure your oil and coolant levels are at full - safety sensors will shut engine down if either is low.

Normally a diesel will run if it is getting air & fuel - even when something mechanical has gone wrong, it will just be rough/noisy.

Be very careful/stingy using ether - only use a small amount and do not continue turning the engine over with it - it is easy to damage the engine this way. It is lacking lubrication (scrubs the cylinder walls) and causes a much higher compression. When you use ether the engine will turn over much faster while running on it.

Check for fuel pressure at the injectors. If OK proceed to pull the glow plugs and do a compression test. I suspect you will find certain cylinders with no compression. If so, pull the front timing cover and inspect timing gears and chain.

Sounds like something invoving the fuel pump timing. This requires special knowledge and special tools. Good luck!!
