What is going on with my 7.3L Diesel, what would be the most likely cause?

89 F250 XLT with 237K on the motor.

I'm coming home from work. Stop at a T intersection, make a left turn. Proceed to accelerate uphill. and all of a sudden, its like someone switched off the key. I coast to a stop, pop the hood, drop the fuel filter, its full. Spritz some ether into the air cleaner, turn it over...... Na da... Motor seems to turn over MUCH faster. Strikes me as a sudden loss of compression. So I'm thinking timing chain or Cam, but I'm no diesel mechanic. What say all of you? (About the motor - not me)

Step one.. It's a 1989.. before computerization... Basically next step would probably be a diesel compression test.

sounds like high pressure pump failure which would lead to injector failure but without an I.D.S. i wouldn't know right off hand
