Question about a union shop?

Curious about a union shop. I work for a large communication corporation. That has represented and non-represented offices in different states. Most union employees state they have more benefits and say in their hours, pay, and legal cases.

I am currently in a shop with only 1 other tech, non represented employees, due to the recent economy our call out and extra pays have been reduced.

Although I don't agree with it all, still it is a good job.

The other tech wants to become a union shop here, but my question is if there is only two employees , how much of a case can we make with a large corporation ? It seems to me that two things may happen. The company could go with it... or may just say " If you don't want to go along with policy , we can replace you.' Something they really don't want to do right away to seek and train new techs , but given this debate I think that is where it will go.

I will listen to the steward to see what he says, and respect for co-worker. But also want to keep my job !!!

Any comments or experience ? Thanks very much !!!

Update:

Thanks for your comments, to add to this it is not my idea.

It is the other employee, I can certainly understand his reasons and his needs which this person is by all means free to pursue !! However I myself will go along to a point,,, but will also stay unrepresented if I see it may not work. It takes a majority of employees to bargain. , so if I vote no then it is over and his fight is lost.

So I guess I have answered that it best to protect me first either way.

Update 2:

Nope Steve, we are not. Never have been. A shop in a neighbor state was already union with about 100 workers before our company annexed them.

My co-worker sees what they have and thinks we can just do the same.

We don't have a steward here, just talking with one and the labor board.

Just that looking at what they have and doing it here is 2 different entities. The only way I see this is to join the neighbor union or stay as is. I agree two alone will not work. Unless the labor board union rep knows something I probably don't yet.

I belong to a small union in a large megacorporation. They only seem to tolerate us. WIth only 2 of you right now I wouldn't bother. It would be cheaper to replace you with contractors. It would be good if you could pull it off but I would bet against you.

You can indeed have a bargaining unit of 2 (ie... your coworker and you). Now mind you, your job is not guarenteed as you must negotiate your first job contract. With all due respect, I don't give a crap how good you are at your job, I can always replace two workers with contractors. Especially in a bad economy.

A company can fire at will employees at any time with certain exceptions. Believe it or not, trying to create a union and being black are equal in terms of being an exception.

If you are looking to become represented, you don't go to the company. You go to the NLRB or the local that would represent you. See if you can be "Accretion'ed" (added to an existing bargaining unit). Don't approach the company directly.

    Good luck.

You say you have a steward so this shop is Unionized. Ask for a copy of the Union Contract from the Steward (keep it quite with the company) and see if you are not already covered in that agreement. If not ask the steward to find out why not, and if they can add you and your co worker to the agreement if you would want to. Never go into it with just you 2 unless you can affiliate with a larger group.
