Traveling to the US.With the Swine Flu still spreading..is it risky to take the trip with our 4yr old daughter?
We are traveling to the US next week to see my parents (Virginia). My in-laws and my wife are freaking out because they know that the Swine flu is still spreading, and are worried that my 4 year old daughter might catch it during our trip...and are pushing me to cancel the trip. My parents, on the other hand, have mentioned nothing on the swine flu and are looking forward to the visit.
I myself took into account the very low death rate, and the slow spread of the virus (the numbers are still growing, but it doesn't seem to grow at such a huge rate) and didn't think it would be something to worry about. Now that I booked the tickets, I am starting to have second thoughts...what would you do?
Also, has anyone here or someone you know caught the Swine Flu?

the swine flue has been highly blown out of proportion.
it definitely is something to be careful about, but it is nothing as serious ad the media would like to make it.

Are you this apprehensive of traveling during flu season, October to May? This is the flu we're talking about, not the Black Plague.
So your parents haven't mentioned it. Your parents may have assumed that you're already aware of swine flu or it could be that they may be better educated about it than you, your wife and your wife's parents are. For example, (1) swine flu spreads rapidly not slowly, (2) because diagnosis requires a blood test which means a trip to the doctor, many cases are going unreported so don't trust the statistics and (3) don't feel so reassured by the current death rates. Seasonal flu kills something like 36,000 a year. (a)H1N1 is still new on the scene. Wait until it gets more established. I suspect by fall, it'll be back again. Of course, you shouldn't be impressed or scared by flu death rates. Most of these deaths are a result of flu complications and it's those people with certain pre-existing conditions that predispose them to flu complications who run into trouble. So unless you, your wife and/or your daughter has a pre-existing condition that predisposes you/her to flu complications, have a nice flight & enjoy your visit. Believe me, it's just the flu.
