Your understanding of the person who said this?
“I would rather be a man than a woman. If God had made me a man I would have been the worst son of a great whore ever born. Not a woman would have escaped me. Ave María! I’d have a woman everywhere, and if they didn’t give me what I wanted I’d kick my way in. That’s why God made me a woman, a real ***** of one. I’m forty now and I’ve had six husbands, and if I want, I can have six more. I wipe my *** with men.”
--Fernanda in "La Vida" by Oscar Lewis
This is a real quote from a real woman in an anthropological study (subject of my dissertation).
Is she straight, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, or something else altogether?
I'm serious--what's your opinion of her sexual identity from this quote?

Sexually straight, I'd say, but this person has some real sexual issues.
Reasoning: I believe that this may have been written before the so-called "sexual revolution," and that her sentiment about wishing to have been born a man was not an indication of transgender issues, but a statement about men being generally more promiscuous than women, which used to be the case, or was at least perceived to be the case. In other words, it was an expression of her desire to be sexually promiscuous. That's how I read it, anyway.
Her last sentence shows a real disregard for the opposite sex which, I believe, is fairly common among the promiscuous: they regard their sex partners only as sex objects, and not as human beings, and therefore never develop genuine lasting relationships. This would also be supported by the number of past spouses, and her dismissive attitude towards future spouses.

An enigmatic, militant, psychopath who doesn't make a lot of sense with that statement but sure does indicate a serious anger problem.
EDIT: It's difficult to tell from that statement but if I were forced to make a guess I would say she is somewhere between a lesbian and an would be transsexual. She clearly has an aversion to men but the repeated marriages indicate that she has a deep down desire to follow the "societal norm". Perhaps that's why she wishes she were a man so she could have a relationship with a woman without being stigmatized by society. But there's so little clarity and logic in her statement, I am not sure she's a rock solid fit into anything but the "something else altogether" category.

She's a straight female who has been harshly treated by men.
What she's getting at is that she thinks men are more powerful than women, so if she had been born a man, she wouldn't have had to put up with what she did.
And her anger has made her contemptuous of men -- a way of feeling empowered.
In short, she's not proclaiming that she wishes she were a man simply so she could have sex with women. It's not sex she's talking about, but rather having power and being in controlled and not being taken advantage of.
She's quite angry. :-)

I think she's straight and she laments the fact that female promiscuity isn't as accepted as male promiscuity.
