Positive discrimination will kill the UK?

The Sun, Thurs June 18th...."Thousands of top state jobs must go to women, black, Asian, or disabled people, Harriet Harmen said last night.....Half of new appointments must go to women by 2011, with 14 per cent to disabled people and 11 percent to ethnic minorities."

Where will this lead? Nothing about qualities, qualifications, ability, experience - let's just fill the quotas.

(I am disabled; far from a racist, and not a misogynist).

Harriet Harman's policy just doesn't make sense to me. A black

disabled female will be shortlisted for a job above all others, irrespective of ability.

Tell me if my thinking is wrong.....

Update:

Carry On - no, this is not a 1970's comic tv programme. It is a promise from a Minister in the UK govt, circa 2009.

Don't know if that will work. In 2005 the Labour Party decided to to put forward only female candidates in the constituency I live, (Blaenau Gwent) for the General Election as the party thought it should increase female MPs in Wales. In protest Peter Law stood as an Independent at the election in what was deemed the safest Parliamentary seat in Wales. Peter Law won the seat by over 9,000 votes in what was a humiliating defeat for Labour.

Not saying he would not have won the seat anyway but a lot of people voted for him in protest at the Labour Party for only putting female candidates forward.

A good example of when if the public think something is wrong it uses it's influence (in this case votes) to do something about it.

They won't manage it, the BBC took the mick out of politicians in the late 70's and early 80's with the exact same gag in Yes Minister, (which was written by ex government insiders, and it's as relevent today as it was then) and you'll see people getting round it for a variety of reasons. It won't work.

The situations in Yes Minister could have been written last week. Sleaze, unemployment, dodgy deals, expenses...yes it's dated but it's spot on satirically speaking and it was written 30 years ago.

One quote when they are looking for an ideal candidate was on the lines of..'What we need is a black, disabled, female trade unionist'...so if they faced the same problems 30 years ago, Harman isn't going to sort it out in 18 years, let alone18 months.

edit: Yes, but the result will be the same.

It is absolutely wrong to give jobs to people only because of their kind of minorities. Also, this is racism for me, because

it can be understandable that minorities cannot get jobs without this help from the government. All people should treat the same, and employers should give jobs to people who have qualities for jobs.

    positive discrimination is discrimination.

ask anyone (male or female) and they will tell you that they prefer working for a male boss.
