Generator light still on after replacing voltage regulator.?

Replaced voltage regulator on my 83 Sportster because the new battery would not hold a charge for more than 200 miles. Charged battery overnight with trickle charger. When I started bike, the generator light stays on and will glow brighter when I rev the engine. Never had this happen before. Any tips or suggestions on what to check would be appreciated. I will now go drink a beer and wait for the mighty brains in cyber land to offer advice.

I cant remember exactly how (smoked too much) but there is a proceedure for polarizing regulator after replacing regulator, thats with a generator system, if you have an altenater system then forget i said anything...now i remember, there's a connector on regulator that you have to jump to positive, you only have to do this once to polarize system but if you dont do it and run engine it'll burn out generator
