Generator light stays on after replacing voltage regulator.?
Replaced voltage regulator on 83 Sportster because the new battery would loose charge after less than 200 miles.
Trickled charged battery over night.
When I started the bike, generator light stays on and will glow brighter when engine is sped up.
This has never happened before.
Need tips on what to check for.
I will now go drink a beer or two and wait for the mighty brains in cyber land to provide useful information to resolve this simple issue.

the generator should have been flashed when you changed the battery....there is a FIELD post that needs to be shorted QUICKLY to the positive terminal...if you changed the battery then had the charging issue that is why...the generator has no way of knowing what the polarity is until you flash it....just use a length of wire from the battery......save the regulator it is probably good

Since the light brightens when you speed it up, that indicates the alternator is charging. Not sure about your bike, but the old generator equipped cars had a little device that made connection below a given voltage and broke connection when the voltage exceeded a given voltage. Almost like a turn signal relay in a way. If your bike has a similiar device, I'd suspect that. However, if it started doing that immediately after swapping out the regulator, I'd be looking for an additional wire that goes to the regulator that wasn't hooked up. It may be a wire that goes to the device that senses the voltage and operates the warning light. Hopefully there are people here more experienced with HD. Good luck.

ok get an ohm meter where your voltage reg connects to the stator run the bike and check the AC voltage there should be around 50 v AC if not you have a bad stator . im betting you changed the regulator and didnt really need to now the fun begins pull your primary apart remember to switch ohm meter to AC for test

first get a meter and start the bike,now with the meter set on volts D.C. you should get a reading of 13.5 at idle and it can go as high as 14 volts when you rev it up a little. As for the warning light I dont think it should even be on.I removed mine And cant remember!

The way to tell if your battery is dead is to turn on your head lights. If it is dim, then the battery is discharged and you won't be able to start the car. If the battery is ok, then it must be starter switch or a broken electrical line.
