Trying to remember the name of a film HELP!?

In this classic film noir, a tough guy actor plays a murderer who poses as a traveling preacher. He discovers that a man who is in jail has money hidden, and marries his ex-wife in order to find out where it it hidden from her children, who know. They won't tell and wind up running down river from him in a boat.
