Limewire doesn't give you a virus. It's a program that searches for files and lets you download them to the computer. The files that it searches for CAN contain a virus.

Limewire isn't illegal, as it doesn't provide the files itself as a download. This way they can cover themselves from being sued. People like you and me are the ones that put files into the P2P traffic for downloading. Limewire just searches for the files we put up. It's kinda like how Google is a search engine for websites.

Most files will probably be illegal - but Limewire the program itself ISN'T illegal.

How to avoid downloading a file with a virus:

First, when wanting to download a program or software, DO NOT USE LIMEWIRE. Limewire is best suited for downloading .mp3 (aka; songs), and horrible for programs as you can't accurately judge to see if the program is fake, real, or a virus.

So if you want to download a song, make sure to do it like this; say you want to download Iris by the Goo Goo dolls. Do NOT type in the whole song name plus artist name (so do not type: 'Iris Goo Goo Dolls'). Only type in the title of the song (so only 'Iris'). Once Limewire beings searching you'll get a bunch of results you do not need.

Avoid file names such as; 'Best of' or ending with '2009' or 'live' stuff like that. Also avoid the file that is the exact same name as what you typed in (it will even be in lower-case if you typed in lower-case).

Now once you avoid those obvious virus files, you'll see a file pop up with the title name AND the artist name in it. 90% of the time, this is the working and virus-free file, because they got the title in it's name that you typed in AND the artist name that you DIDN'T type in.

Make sure to always either type in the title, or type in the artist name. Never do both, as you will get plenty of files that pop up in 'disguise' as your title + artist name, just to trick you into downloading.

Anyways, good luck with Limewire. Remember. Limewire is legal, but usually the files you're downloading AREN'T legal.

Limewire doesn't give you viruses, people who click every song they see get viruses.

The major things to watch out for are: Quality, song names, and albumn names.

If a song says it's bad quality, don't download it. It's either a virus or a crappy version of the song.

If a song's name says anything similar to: "Best of (Yourband'snamehere)" DON'T DOWNLOAD IT! 10 times out of 10, that's a virus.

And last but most common, if the song is missing the albumn name or band name, don't download it.

If it's missing the albumn name, and you think it's still a good copy, download the song until it gets to 15%, then right click on it and click on "Preview". If it's real, then the song will start to play, if it's fake, then nothing will happen and you should delete it from your computer and run a scan.

    Hope that I helped! :D

It can give your computer viruses from the files you download, so yes. Limewire by itself is not illegal, but using it to download copyrighted music, movies, software, etc is illegal.

You could get viruses from what you download, but limewire itself won't give you viruses. Only pirating copyrighted material is illegal.

Limewire itself will not give you viruses although the files you download with it may. No it is not illegal!

The software contains no viruses, and it is perfectly legal...

However, the files available to download, almost every file you see, is illegal, and those files may or may not have a virus
