The city is repeatedly described as a labyrinth or a maze – once you get into it, it’s hard to get back out. The city itself serves as a kind of prison. It’s filthy, foggy, and crime-ridden, and things aren’t always what they seem. For example, Oliver gets dragged "into a labyrinth of dark, narrow courts" (1.15.63), and Fagin "becomes involved" in "a maze of mean dirty streets which abound in that close and densely-populated quarter" (1.19.4).
